Oppose the lead ammo ban bill

ACTION ALERT

OPPOSE A5021/S4225 – NEW JERSEY LEAD AMMUNITION BAN

New Jersey legislators are advancing bills A5021/S4225, which would phase in a ban on traditional lead ammunition for hunting within three years.

We oppose these bills because they impose a mandate without ensuring that affordable, widely available alternatives exist for New Jersey hunters.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Hunting is one of the most important wildlife management tools available. When wildlife populations, such as deer, exceed the carrying capacity of available habitat, the result can be habitat degradation, vegetation loss, agricultural damage, increased disease transmission, and declining ecosystem health.

The impacts extend far beyond game species. Songbirds, pollinators, reptiles, amphibians, and countless other wildlife depend upon healthy habitat to survive.

By increasing costs and limiting access to ammunition, these bills risk reducing hunting participation and weakening a proven conservation management system. The legislation’s three-year timeline is based on an arbitrary date—not on whether practical, affordable alternatives are actually available to sportsmen.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Please contact the following legislative leaders and respectfully urge them to oppose A5021/S4225:

  • Senator Nicholas P. Scutari, Senate President (LD22) – 732-827-7480

  • Assemblyman Craig J. Coughlin, Assembly Speaker (LD19) – 732-855-7441

  • Senator Bob Smith, Environment and Energy Committee Chair  (LD17) – 732-752-0770

  • Assemblyman James J. Kennedy, Environment and Solid Waste Committee Chair (LD22) – 732-943-2660

Tell your legislators to protect affordable access to hunting, support science-based wildlife management, and ensure conservation policies are practical, effective, and grounded in habitat stewardship.

Thank you,
